Bringing home a Shih Tzu puppy is an exciting and joyful experience. These affectionate, loyal companions quickly become beloved family members. As a second-generation Shih Tzu breeder with over 10 years of experience at Delasa Forever Shih Tzu, I've created this comprehensive guide to help new owners navigate every aspect of Shih Tzu care across the USA and Canada.
Understanding the Shih Tzu Breed
Shih Tzus were originally bred as companion dogs for Chinese royalty. Today, they remain one of the most popular toy breeds worldwide. Known for their lion-like appearance, these small dogs pack big personalities into compact bodies.
- Size: 9-16 pounds, 8-11 inches tall
- Lifespan: 10-16 years with proper care
- Temperament: Affectionate, outgoing, playful, and alert
- Good with: Families, children, seniors, apartments
Preparing Your Home for a Shih Tzu Puppy
Before bringing your puppy home, create a safe, welcoming environment. Essential supplies include: high-quality puppy food, food and water bowls, comfortable bed, crate for training, puppy pads, grooming supplies, toys, collar and leash.
Feeding Your Shih Tzu
Puppy Stage (8 weeks - 12 months)
Feed small breed puppy formula 3-4 times daily. At Delasa Forever Shih Tzu, we recommend Royal Canin Shih Tzu Puppy or Wellness Small Breed Puppy.
Adult Stage (1-7 years)
Feed twice daily, approximately ½ to 1 cup total per day. Avoid free-feeding as Shih Tzus can easily overeat.
Foods to avoid: Chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, xylitol, and avocado.
Grooming Your Shih Tzu
Shih Tzus have beautiful double coats that require consistent maintenance. Daily brushing prevents mats and tangles. Bathe every 2-3 weeks, trim nails regularly, and clean ears weekly.
Training Your Shih Tzu
Shih Tzus are intelligent but can be stubborn. Positive reinforcement training works best. Consistency is key for potty training – take your puppy out first thing in the morning, after meals, after naps, and before bed.
